Shania Twain is one of the latest in a long and distinguished line of Canadian female Country artists that include Anne Murray, Rita McNeil, Michelle Wright, Lisa Brokop, Patricia Conroy and Susan Aglukark. The name "Shania" is an Ojibwa word meaning "I'm on my way" and fits this incredibly talented woman to a tee. Born Eileen Twain in Windsor Ontario, but raised in the Sudbury/Timmins area, Shania has been involved with the music industry from a very young age. As a young girl, she would sing in the local nightclubs after 1 AM when they had stopped serving alcohol. Her parents were extremely supportive of their talented daughter and pushed her onto the musical path though it was something she very much enjoyed doing. She has used the word "forced" in past interviews when describing the way her parents directed her towards a singing career, but she says now that it was a poor choice of words and that singing was fun and that it was her pleasure. On Nov 1, 1987, Shania's parents were killed in a collision with a logging truck and she suddenly found herself having to take care of her three younger siblings. She was only 21 at the time and it was difficult taking over the parental duties for her 18 year old sister and two brothers, 14 and 13. She has an older sister, but she was married with kids of her own. After settling her parents estate by selling off her father's logging equipment, Shania began working with a Cabaret troupe at a resort in Deerhurst, Ont. Times were tough for the next few years and, at times, she even found herself bathing and washing clothes in a nearby river. The kids eventually grew up and moved out and it was at this time that she took the name of Shania (given to her by her Ojibwa father when she was a child) and began the trek down the musical road again. Shania's manager arranged for a well-connected Nashville lawyer to hear her sing and this led to a record deal with Mercury/Nashville; producing her self-titled debut album. This is where her husband, John "Mutt" Lange comes into the picture. He was intrigued by her first album and arranged to meet with Shania at Fan-Fair '93. The chemistry was instantaneous and the couple were married six months later on Dec 28, 1993. With Shania's talent and Mutt's production skills, you knew that the results were going to be nothing short of spectacular and her second album, "The Woman In Me", proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt! Spawing five (so far!) hit singles, this musical effort has hit the top of the charts in Canada as well as the United States. This is an even more remarkable achievment when you consider that she never had to tour to promote the album. With her many awards and her interviews on the Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman, it's becomes obvious that her star is rising at warp speed with no signs of stopping or even slowing down. As a fellow Canadian I'm very proud of this Country Music Diva and I dedicate this page in her honour! I hope you enjoy what I have made available here and I also hope you will write me and let me know your thoughts/comments or submit any information you might have so I can incorperate it into any future incarnations of this page. My E-mail address is located at the bottom of the page. Shania's album, "The Woman in Me" has passed the "Diamond" mark in sales here in Canada. That's one million copies sold! She is the first country artist to ever to achieve this milestone. She has also sold over eleven million albums in the United States making her the fastest and highest selling female country artist ever! Source: geocities.com/Nashville/7321/index.html |
